Yesterday July 9th was a joyful day as members and apprentices of MCSPA celebrated the Family Day in Nairobi. This event brought together people from different walks of life. It began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Joseph Ekalimon, Vicar General of the Diocese of Lodwar, followed by presentations of videos and testimonies. The same event also marks 30 years of MCSPA’s presence in Turkana as well as the 25th priestly anniversary of Frs. Albert, Fernando and Avelino. We thank all our family members, relatives and friends for their presence and celebrating with us these auspicious milestones. Thank you all and may God bless you!

Today June 23, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the arrival of the first members of the MCSPA to start living permanently in Turkana. It was on the eve of St. John the Baptist’s Day and in spite of the precariousness of the situation we managed to celebrate the feast the best way possible. We arrived at an empty house and with a few things that we had been able to carry in a borrowed car. So many things have happened since then! From the small dispensary that already existed, we were able to go to the border with Ethiopia and South Sudan with our presence and work covering an important part of northern Turkana to this day: health, water, nutrition, education, agriculture …. Also From Turkana, cradle of Humanity, we went out to the whole world, America, Europe, Asia to continue sowing hope and to make Africa known to those who did not know about it to promote solidarity among all peoples, in the style of St. Paul.

One of the most interesting things is that children of those days are now adults, with their own families, growing and improving their lives and those of their families. The integral development of the human person has been and remains to this day our primary goal, including evangelization, showing the world a Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the full Life for all. As Bishop John Mahon, the first bishop of Lodwar (Turkana) said, our mission is to liberate all those oppressed by hunger, ignorance and opportunities.

We thank God for bringing us to the desert, a place of trial and at the same time a wonderful place of encounter with the Creator, where you can contemplate beauty of the human being in its purest, simplest state. We entrust ourselves to Mary, Mother of the Church, so that we may continue along this path to the end.

Members of the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle and Mary Mother of the Church celebrate Holy Week with the christian faithful around the different missions in Turkana, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Malawi, Philippines and Mexico.

As we celebrate the passion death and resurrection of Jesus, we join our hearts with all Christians and people of good around the world to pray together for peace.

Small Erus is one of the places where the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle is working. There, we have a Mother and Child Center and a Community garden.

Esther is a creative and very hard working woman who started her garden out of her own initiative. She was one of the women helping us everyday in St. Luke’s Mother and Child Center, cooking for the children, bathing them, etc. At the same time she started planting some small crops. As we saw her interest in gardening, we helped her to fence the plot that she was using and we installed a shade house and a drip irrigation system for her.

Nowadays, she produces different types of vegetables such as: spinach, onions, tomatoes, beetroot, Kale, local vegetables, water melon and sweet melon, etc. She already has a stable group of clients who are the teachers from St. Paul Primary School Riokomor, workers from Small Erus dam construction, the villagers from Small Erus,  Riokomor and the people from different organizations who normally pass by.

This garden made her to become a role model in her community and in her family. In addition, thanks to the harvest, she improves her family nutrition and she is also able to take some money home. This has influenced other mothers to start their own small garden in their houses.

The most important element is that she provides vegetables to the diet of the children in the Mother and Child Center and that has a great impact in their health, improves their eating habits and helps them to introduce new items in their daily meals.

All these changes in the life of Esther, her family and the community at large are possible thanks to the help of the benefactors that year after year support the Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle in their work. THANK YOU!

Recientemente el Cardenal de Addis Abeba, Mons. Berhaneyesus Souraphiel visitó la recién inaugurada residencia de estudiantes “Maite Iglesias Home”, en la misión de la MCSPA en Muketuri, Etiopía. El Cardenal visitó también el Saint Joseph Mother and Child Centre, donde incluso hizo bromas con los niños e interactuó con ellos, sacándolos a la pizarra y haciéndoles dibujar y cantar, recordando su pasado como maestro de escuela. También pudo hablar con el comité de padres y reunirse con las profesoras, con las que compartió el desayuno para después bendecir la nueva sala de profesoras. Después visitó el huerto del Centro, el gallinero y la vaquería. En el salón multiusos, las mujeres del taller de costura le prepararon la obligada ceremonia del café. Más tarde las misioneras con el Cardenal visitaron un poblado a 7 km de Muketuri para ver algunos de los huertos donde se producen verduras en la época seca, gracias al programa de excavación de pozos manuales que la MCSPA lleva a cabo enla zona. Los campesinos explicaron las verduras que producen para el consumo familiar y la venta en los mercados locales. Pudimos sacar agua de los pozos manuales, incluso beber agua de ellos y bromear mojándonos unos a otros.. La comida fue en la residencia de estudiantes Maite Iglesias Home, inagurada el pasado 6 de noviembre. El administrador de la provincia se sumó a la comida y pudieron hablar con las estudiantes y animarlas a aprovechar la oportunidad que tienen de poder tener un lugar donde continuar sus estudios secundarios.

250 children, their parents and the MCSPA members from Nariokotome mission, kokuselei, Todonyang and Lobur Missions attended the end of the year celebration at St. Joseph Mother and Child Educational Centre.

The day started with the holy mass at the school hall. Later there were different games, poems, dances, songs just to mention but a few. The report cards were issued and all the 250 children went home happy with a gift of two.

Thank you parents, teachers, students, the MCSPA family and all who made this day, one to be remembered.

Nakua Lomlim tenía 14 años y vivía en Kakuta, un poblado situado en la zona Nyangatom, al sur de Etiopía, haciendo frontera con Kenia y Sudán. Vino a nuestra misión porque estaba enfermo, con inflamación severa y dolor de toda la parte izquierda de la cara y del cuello. En esta zona no existe ningún tipo de asistencia sanitaria. En el pueblo más próximo tampoco podían atenderle, necesitaba ir a Addis Abeba. En la capital le diagnosticaron un cáncer nasofaríngeo, ya extendido a la zona intracraneal y ósea. Comenzó el tratamiento con quimioterapia, cada 21 días. Durante los meses que estuvo en Addis fue perdiendo también la visión. Y empezó a tomar morfina para el dolor.

Nakua falleció el día 21 de Septiembre. Gracias al tratamiento paliativo, murió sin sufrir. El día 22 de septiembre se celebró el funeral en la Iglesia Católica de San Gabriel, con la presencia de su hermano que lo estuvo acompañando durante su enfermedad, varios miembros de la Comunidad Misionera de San Pablo Apóstol y varios amigos y personas cercanas de los misioneros que viven en la ciudad. Su familia fue informada sobre su proceso de enfermedad y sobre su fallecimiento, pero no pudieron asistir al funeral ya que no existe acceso a transporte público desde su lugar de residencia hasta los pueblos mejor comunicados para poder viajar hasta la capital.

Como Nakua, hay muchas personas de diferentes edades que, si consiguen llegar a Addis Abeba, tendrán la oportunidad de recibir tratamiento para el cáncer. Ya que solamente existe un hospital gubernamental, “Black Lion Hospital”, con la especialidad de Oncología y con los medios necesarios para el diagnóstico y tratamiento. (Quimioterapia y radioterapia). Hasta ahora son pocas las personas que han conseguido llegar a la ciudad y pueden pagar los gastos médicos. En muchos casos es demasiado tarde para poder curarse y reciben tratamiento paliativo. En Etiopía hay una Asociación contra el Cáncer y están intentando mejorar la educación sobre prevención y detección de la enfermedad, así como intentar ayudar a las personas que van a Addis Abeba para el tratamiento, para que tengan un lugar donde dormir y comer.

De acuerdo a los registros de los hospitales, en Etiopía hay más de 200.000 casos de cáncer al año. Algunos pacientes, entre 60.000 y 125.000, pueden llegar al Hospital “Black Lion” para su tratamiento. Solamente unos 500 pacientes al año (menos del 1%), pueden conseguir tratamiento, debido a su elevado coste.

Yesterday, members of mcspa from Todonyang and Lobur missions had a full day Peace meeting at Napeikar village with the County Peace Field Coordinator Johnston Ekamais and subcounty warden, DO Kibish, chiefs, elders and local community representatives.

The result of the talks was that the county government commit themselves to sponsor and lead a Civic Education Campaign in all villages and nomadic settlements of Todonyang-Kibish corridor, beginning on 11th October. This will culminate with a meeting with 5 representatives from each population centre, so that they can adopt a range of measures to bring about peace in the area.

Lobur Mission have committed to re-open all the usual services in the next few days.

Aquí os presentamos los adelantos de la construcción de la guardería con el sistema de Cal-Earth, a base de sacos llenos de tierra y revocado con diferentes mezclas de materiales naturales de la zona. Ya hemos terminado la base del comedor y en las semanas entrantes acabaremos de colocar el tejado. Unido al comedor se ve la cocina y el almacén, que al ser más pequeño se pueden cerrar con el mismo sistema hasta arriba. Y a la vez ya hemos empezado a construir las duchas y el muro que rodea todos los edificios y que le hemos puesto ruedas para que sea un juego para los niños. Y faltan las dos aulas, que vamos a empezar en breve.
El ritmo de nuestro equipo de trabajo es muy bueno y estamos muy contentos con el progreso de la construcción. Ahh, y los árboles que hemos plantado van creciendo muy bien. Es verdad que algunos se han secado, pero contábamos con ello.
