Nyangatom and Turkana: A Journey of Hope to a Lasting Peace

From 22 to 24 November, Nyangatom Mission was honoured to welcome the Catholic Women’s Association as well as some members of the Catholic Men’s Association from Queen of Peace Mission at Todonyang.

The main purpose of their visit was to share with the people at Nyangatom different experiences both in faith and culture.

It was an interaction that sparked a lot of emotional reactions as this was the first time that such an event of this sort has been hosted by the mission. Indeed, recalling all the terrible conflict that has been going on between the Turkana and the Nyangatom, no one expected such an encounter to take place. The Turkana and Nyangatom peoples are two tribes that are similar in terms of language and cultural practices. However, they are separated by the international boundary between Kenya and Ethiopia. The Turkana belong to Kenya while the Nyangatom are in the latter. Conflict between the two communities have persisted over generations due to a lack of resources. Cattle raiding was the daily bread of life and the loss of life was considered the expected norm.

However, due to great efforts from many parties, the Catholic Church included, throughout the past 3 years, there has been peace between the two tribes and this has facilitated some interaction and sharing between the two tribes.

The visit of the people from Todonyang is a sign of the peace being currently enjoyed by the two tribes. We hope this will be the first of many visits and interactions that will seal a more permanent peace. We pray also that the peace that has been restored will yield much fruit and that we may not see anymore bloodshed between the two peoples.

It was a moving occasion to see the interaction between peoples who were previously enemies and who have now known peace.

May Christ, the Prince of Peace, and Mary, the Queen of Peace, forever guide and teach us the way to work for peace.

Youth Formation at Todonyang Parish: Combating Drug and Substance Abuse

24 April 2024 Posted by MCSPA, Mission 0 thoughts on “Youth Formation at Todonyang Parish: Combating Drug and Substance Abuse”

The 2 intense days of the Youth Formation workshop at Todonyang Parish focused on combating drug and substance abuse among youth.

Under the guidance of a dynamic speaker, the workshops delved deep into various facets of substance misuse, fostering an environment of education and empowerment. Participants were engaged in discussions on recognising warning signs of drug abuse, dissecting the underlying causes, and exploring effective support mechanisms.

As the sessions unfolded, attendees acquired practical skills for intervening in crisis situations and accessing relevant resources. Through role-playing and scenario-based exercises, they honed their ability to respond effectively to substance-related emergencies and extend aid to those in need.

Beyond imparting knowledge and skills, the workshops served as a platform for forging connections and nurturing a sense of solidarity among participants. The collaborative setting encouraged individuals to unite, exchange ideas, and collaborate towards the shared objective of building healthier and more resilient communities.

As the workshop came to a close, the departing participants were emboldened and motivated to sustain their efforts in combating drug abuse within their communities. The workshop sparked meaningful dialogue and action, underscoring the pivotal role of education, empowerment, and collective action in addressing complex social challenges.

While the football match offered a moment of relaxation and camaraderie, it was the sessions that epitomised the essence of the Todonyang Parish Youth Formation Workshop, equipping attendees with the tools and determination to effect positive change in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

Bishop’s visit to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish-Todonyang

25 May 2019 Posted by News 0 thoughts on “Bishop’s visit to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish-Todonyang”

Today, 25th May 2019, there was a great celebration at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Todonyang. The celebration was marked by several events which include; confirmation of 82 people, blessing of Class 8 2019 candidates, and blessing of the newly completed multipurpose hall (dining hall and kitchen inclusive).

Three years ago, we lost one of the elders from the Dassenech community in the school compound, when all were gathered to celebrate ten years since Todonyang mission re-opened and there was peace.

Today we have remembered that all who lost their lives in this border area from both Turkana and Dassenech communities. We pray that peace will prevail in this corridor and all who pass by Our Lady Queen of Peace School, will be ambassadors of peace wherever they go.

In his homily and speech, Bishop Dominic called all to be peace ambassadors.

Todonyang Integrated Centres was the best in Turkana North in last year’s KCPE exams. We thank all MCSPA members who previously worked in Todonyang and the current ones in the persons of Frs. Andrew and Wycliffe. We also thank the mission staff for making Todonyang what it is today. God bless you all!
