This past Sunday, the parish of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Kibish (Turkana, Kenya), celebrated the commissioning of 13 members into the Catholic Women’s Association (CWA). The celebration took place at St. John the Evangelist Mission, one of the outstations of the parish. It was a colourful ceremony where the newly incorporated women were encouraged to live intensely and joyfully their vocation as Catholic women.

Theme: “Hope Does Not Disappoint”

From 18 to 21 August, the 3rd Youth Encounter of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Deanery was held at the outstation of St. John the Evangelist (Lobur Mission) in Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish, Kibish. The event was guided by the inspiring theme, “Hope Does Not Disappoint”.

6 parishes of the Deanery were invited to attend, but due to heavy rains, only four were able to make the journey. We were also delighted to welcome St. Joseph the Worker Parish from the Lake Deanery as a special guest.

Over the four days, young people came together in faith, fellowship and joy. We prayed the Rosary, celebrated the Holy Eucharist and shared meals as one community. The event featured a variety of sports including volleyball, basketball, football, and track events (100m, 200m, and 400m) for both girls and boys. The evenings were filled with music, dance and other lively entertainment, creating a joyful and memorable atmosphere.

A heartfelt “Thank you!” to all the parishes who participated to help make this encounter a true celebration of hope and unity.

Joy in Turkana: 22 New Farmers Graduate from Furrows in the Desert

22 June 2025 Posted by Community, education, MCSPA, News, Project, Uncategorized 0 thoughts on “Joy in Turkana: 22 New Farmers Graduate from Furrows in the Desert”

Lobur, Turkana North – June 19, 2025

Today, Lobur Mission celebrated with excitement as 22 men and women graduated from the Furrows In the Desert (FID) program, ready to turn Turkana’s dry lands into green fields. In Turkana, where scorching heat and scarce rains make life difficult, most people rely on herding goats and cattle, a nomadic way of life woven into their rich culture of storytelling, dance and community. But with climate change drying up pastures, the need to grow food is becoming a lifeline, and FID is leading the way.

For 5 months, these graduates learned to farm in this harsh semi-arid land, from preparing soil to selling crops and even cooking what they grow. “This isn’t just farming—it’s about changing lives,” said Mr. Munene, FID’s Operations Manager. “These farmers ate their own vegetables, proof they can feed their families and neighbors.” A 2025 graduate beamed, saying, “The work is hard, but it fills my heart. We need help to keep going!” Rose, who graduated in 2023, added, “FID gave me a job. Now, I tell others: transform your villages with what you’ve learned.”

Maque, FID’s Director, shared how the program began in 2009 after a trip to Israel, growing with help from partners in Israel and the MCSPA. She urged everyone to work together, saying, “Our farmers shouldn’t feel alone. Markets like Kakuma are waiting for their crops.” She, however, registered her worries that some might quit farming for quick cash, especially in the fishing villages of Todonyang near Lake Turkana, and asked for support to keep them on track.

In Kaaleng, Sr. Joy said, “Our land is different now—green and alive—thanks to FID farmers.” Sr. Matilda from Kaikor agreed, “Our farms pay school fees and feed families. Kaikor is an oasis!” Fr. Andrew from Lobur Mission called FID a path to peace, saying, “Food is needed every day. Let’s help these farmers sell their crops so they don’t lose hope.” Mr. Benson Thuku, Area Program Manager from Dan Church Aid (DCA), praised FID for teaching skills that fit Turkana’s challenges. “With climate change, we must grow our own food. These young farmers, most around 30, are our future.”

Lobur Mission gave the trainees a home, and DCA plans to team up with FID in Kalobeyei. Maque thanked the staff for their hard work, saying, “Together, we’re showing Turkana what farming can do.” In a land where survival is a daily fight, these 22 graduates are planting hope, proving that even in the desert, life can bloom.

THE POULTRY FARMING IN LOBUR

28 January 2025 Posted by education, MCSPA, Project 0 thoughts on “THE POULTRY FARMING IN LOBUR”

Lobur Mission is known for its agricultural programme called Furrows in the Desert (FID) which has been in existence for more than 12 years. This mission is located in the semi-arid Turkana County at the northern part of Kenya. The activities of FID includes desert farming which also includes vegetables and maize, hay farming and dairy goat farming.

FID has also introduced a new poultry farming project focussing on layers. This new farming project has made Lobur Mission more agriculturally orientated.

The poultry layer farming project was started by Fr. Joseph Githinji and John Rhiga in 2022. The project was fruitful in 2023, producing a daily average of 210 eggs which we were able to supplement the food given to undernourished kids at the Mother and Child Centres (MCCs).

Lobur mission is under Sts. Joachim and Anne Parish has 12 MCCs with a total of 2000 children. The age range of the children is between 3 to 7 years. This project plays the role of improving the nutritional health of the children at the centres. Each center receives 8 trays of eggs in a week.

With this egg-supplement, the contented villagers are more eager to send their children to the MCCs resulting in an increase in the number of children. These centres are not just feeding centres but are also places where the children receive basic pre-primary education and daily life skills such as hygiene and sanitation. This project has helped to boost our education activities for children.

This year 2025 we see a need to add 150 more layers so that we can provide for an additional 2 more MCCs, that is an additional 210 children. We are looking forward to reaching out to many more children who still need help and attention for their nutrition and education.
