Prior preparations took place to ensure success at the 3rd Talent Show held at St Joseph Kokuselei Comprehensive School.

The whole Kokuselei community gathered to witness the great talent, gifts and skills demonstrated by the learners under the keen eyes of parents, teachers, visitors and missionaries from Kokuselei Mission (MCSPA) who have always supported the school in its developmental, academic, extra-curricular and pastoral activities.

It was enriching to see more deeply all that was showcased by these young people that day for it went beyond mere mimicking or showing, it reflected the effort, love and dedication put by each and every person who, in one way or another, has touched and positively contributed to the lives of these learners.

From cultural plays, modern dances and creative art exhibitions to scientific experiments, the steps taken to highlight growth, morals and professionalism were very evident. Themes on the ills of early marriages, the importance of education and upbringing, and the vital responsibility of parents were communicated with great enthusiasm; these left the audience with laughter and a deeper understanding of the power of these messages.

This Talent Show filled us with much admiration at the knowledge of the learners, the great work done by the teachers, mutual support of the parents, and the tireless efforts of the missionaries whose dream is to equip the youth with lifetime skills for better living and greater sustainability of the Turkana community.

With hearts full of gratitude, we give thanks to all who have been and still continue to be part of this journey, supporting the education of young people around the Kokuselei area.

Kokuselei Mission.

While global warming is at its peak, there’s no doubt that it is rapidly becoming our new normal. In these present times, some places across the world have experienced the change in their climate where temperatures have risen. This has mostly affected large water-bodies which have kept on growing while others are drastically drying up. Before it gets too late, it is time that each and every human being, takes the primary responsibility to be promoters of the good of the environment. This means caring for earth’s green layer by caring for the already existing trees and planting more so as to enjoy all the benefits that come from trees: for food, for medicinal uses, for shade and wind-break, a habitat for animals and humans. The recycling of plastics that contaminate the environment could also positively contribute towards saving nature. If all could unite and work towards promoting the care for nature, life on earth could be much better than what it is now.

At Kokuselei Mission, in Turkana (Kenya), the children of St Joseph’s Konokono Centre are starting to take a lead towards promoting the care of nature through caring for trees and planting more trees that will later be beneficial for the local people living around Kokuselei. This group of children delight in cleaning the environment by collecting plastics around Kokuselei and reusing them for planting and decorative purposes. Together with the help of the missionaries at Kokuselei Mission, they have gone ahead and created St Francis of Assisi Environmental Club through which they will be coordinating activities related to the care of the environment.

All these are moves towards a better world, more beautiful and environment-friendly. The more young people grow up with this kind of sensitivity for the care of the environment, the better, as this will be a seed planted in their hearts that is assured to grow through the generations and bear good fruit.

Kokuselei Mission, Turkana (Kenya)

Last Friday, at Startup Lions ICT Hub Loropio, we MCSPA missionaries of the Kokuselei mission held a two-day workshop with the 40 women volunteers of the committees responsible for our eleven Mother-Child Centers and the child-care agents of each centre. This celebration marked 15 years since the nutrition program was firmly established and has been running throughout in the mountain area of Nariokotome Parish. Two days in which we celebrated the generosity and perseverance of many people who have participated in concrete ways to the success of the program: hundreds of Turkana children every year who can eat twice a day and grow up healthy!

Our special thanks to the men and women of the committees of our mother-child centers, who have voluntarily and cheerfully served and unconditionally loved the children. All the families in more than 14 communities covered by the Kokuselei mission appreciate that these volunteers take on the daily responsibility of preparing breakfast, lunch and assisting in the daily hygiene of the children in a part of Kenya where hunger is still the main challenge to be solved.

We all thank the benefactors who have been part of starting and maintaining these children’s centres, thanks to which infant mortality caused by hunger has been reduced in this area. Our thanks also to the child-care agents, young women and men who help us to monitor the nutrition and health of the children and with various educational activities in each centre.

As missionaries, we want to continue to serve the most vulnerable and respond concretely to the needs of the children of Turkana.  And we trust that these children’s centres will continue to encourage their communities to transmit the virtues of generosity and perseverance, both essential to achieve true development.
