The Eparchy of Emdibir is one of the dioceses providing pastoral and social development services in southwestern Ethiopia. The region was part of the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa until November 2003. Following 80 years of sustained Church presence and service in the area, it was decided to establish an autonomous region. It is located southwest of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
The Eparchy borders the West Shewa Zone of the Oromiya Regional State to the northwest, the Hadiya and Kembata Tembaro Zones of the SNNPRS to the south, the Silte Zone of the SNNPRS to the east, and the Gibe River to the west. The total area of the diocese is approximately 12,000 square kilometres, with an estimated population of 3 million. The main ethnic groups are the Guraghe and Oromo, alongside a variety of minority communities.
The area primarily cultivates enset, khat, and coffee. Recently, farmers with suitable land have also begun growing teff, maize, and wheat. Arable land is scarce, and during the rainy season, small quantities of vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, and cabbages are cultivated.
Following an invitation from Monsignor Musie Gebregiorghis of the Eparchy of Emdibir to the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle (MCSPA) in March 2023, the community established a presence in Dakuna.
The mission, dedicated to St. Scholastica, is located 190 km from Addis Ababa and serves a population of 45,000 (26,305 men and 18,695 women, based on projections from the Ethiopian Statistics Institute’s 2007 E.C. census). Most residents belong to the Guraghe ethnic group.

In 2023, a community development and women’s empowerment project was launched, involving 80 women organised into four groups. These women produce baskets, mats, and other products using local materials. They also receive access to microcredit, enabling them to start businesses such as preparing and selling injera (a traditional local dish), spices, grains, and coffee, among other goods. This project directly benefits approximately 560 people, significantly improving their living conditions.
Regarding care for the elderly, 30 people from two different communities are supported. These beneficiaries receive food, blankets, and clothing. During the last rainy season, which was particularly cold, the recipients expressed gratitude for this assistance.
Another initiative includes monthly retreats organised by the MCSPA members residing in Dakuna for the young Catholics of the Holy Trinity Parish. During these gatherings, young people also participate in cleaning and environmental conservation activities.
Finally, English classes, crafts, and games are conducted on weekends for a group of 60 children in the region, fostering their learning and holistic development.
